Legend of the Galactic Heroes is finally being made into an OVA by Kitty!
Legend of the Galactic Heroes (Tokuma Novels), a hit even among anime fans thanks to Yoshiki Tanaka’s elegant writing, is finally being made into a video animation. Produced by Kitty Films, it is currently in production, aiming for a release next spring. It’s 60 minutes long. Rather than focusing on the main story, it will be a spinoff focusing on the childhood of Reinhard. Anyone who loves “Old Yamato” or “Old Gundam” will be thrilled by this space opera! Hopefully it’s a success and gets adapted for TV.

At last, the bestselling novel series Legend of the Galactic Heroes is being made into an anime. There have been many rumors about it, but it has finally been officially decided. The original author, Yoshiki Tanaka, has also expressed his high expectations for the anime, saying, “Animation diversifies the imagination, and is one of the elements that adds variety to the world. My expectations far outweigh my concerns about the anime adaptation. I sincerely hope that the fans will show the same love for it as they have for the original work.” This month, we will introduce the basic setting and staff. More details will be revealed in a special feature soon.

Synopsis
The main story comprising 10 volumes (9 have been published so far) and 2 volumes of Gaiden (Animage Comics has also published Golden Wings illustrated by Katsumi Michihara) are published by Tokuma Shoten. However, the episode that will be adapted into anime form this time is from the first volume of Gaiden.
In the year 2801, humanity moved the center of its political union from Earth to Theoria, the second planet in the Aldebaran system, and established the Galactic Federation, marking that year as the 1st year in the Universal Calendar. Then, in Universal Calendar Year 310, Rudolf Goldenbaum established the dictatorial Galactic Empire and Goldenbaum Dynasty. Anti-Imperial republicans fled the Empire, and the Free Planets Alliance was formed in Universal Calendar Year 527. The battle between the Empire and the Alliance, which began in Universal Calendar Year 640, continues to this day (the 8th century of the Universal Calendar). With the addition of a third force, the Phezzan Autonomous Region, the situation is one of rock-bottom stalemate, and seemingly hopeless… Entering the stage is Reinhard von Musel on the side of the Empire and Yang Wen-li on the side of the Alliance. This is the story of these two and the “heroes” who stood alongside them.

The OVA Legend of the Galactic Heroes is scheduled for release in theaters in February 1988, and we’re excited to see the passionate work of mechanical designer Naoyuki Katō!
Let’s reveal the latest information about the Legend of the Galactic Heroes anime adaptation that we reported on back in our September issue. First, it has been announced that the much anticipated mechanical designer will be Naoyuki Katō, a veteran of Studio Nue. Mr. Katō has worked on the illustrations for the novel version and is very familiar with Ginyuuden, [sic] but initially he was only planned to be involved in the design concepts. However, he got so into it that all of the designs for the battleships, fighter craft, and other equipment were hand-crafted by him. Although he has been away from the world of animation for over 10 years since “Old Yamato,” he is still one of Japan’s leading illustrators. The high level of perfection in the design drawings on this page is astounding. His ambition is also impressive, as he came up with the idea of covering the surface of Iserlohn Fortress, the location of the battle between the Imperial and Alliance Forces, with a mercury-like liquid heavy metal, providing complete protection from beam weapons and missiles. Hopefully this can be expressed well in the anime!
Reinhard’s ship
Brunhild (Imperial Forces)
A sleek battleship that matches Reinhard’s image. It appears accompanied by two escort ships on either side, like shields. There must be civilians aboard them.
Starfleet Flagship (Imperial Forces)
A gigantic ship which Imperial Fleet Admiral Mückenberger is aboard. The large-caliber neutron cannons (two eight-gun cannons, one two-gun cannon) on the bow give it an intimidating presence. Equipped with Walküres.
Ulysses (Alliance Battleship)
The Alliance’s main battleship. Space fleet battles in this era are almost like the cavalry battles in Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Dokuganryu Masamune, so they’re interesting!
Destroyer (Imperial Forces)
Although it is a destroyer, it is closer to a fighter craft than a warship, and is the same size as the Alliance Spartanian. This is a rear perspective view, but it has four uranium cannons with six guns at the front.
Walküre (Imperial Forces, fighter)
This is the best design so far, with Naoyuki Katō’s style bursting at the seams. The two laser cannon barrels are always pointed towards the enemy, with the nose as the fulcrum. The cockpit can be seen at the top of the nose of this space fighter, which has an attack range of 360 degrees up and down and nearly 180 degrees left and right. Extending behind it is the engine. The cannon barrels are tilted at a 30-degree angle to the cockpit.
General Reinhard
Born on the Imperial capital Odin, the third planet in the Valhalla system. Count of Lohengramm (original name Musel). Born in Imperial Calendar 467. Ambitious.
Yang Wen-li
A genius military strategist born in the Free Planets Alliance in the year 767 of the Universal Calendar. His surname is of Asian origin.
Reuenthal
A rear admiral in the Imperial Forces. A handsome man with heterochromia. He devotes himself to Reinhard’s ambition.
Kircheis
A childhood friend of Reinhard and a classmate at the military academy. A young red-haired officer who later becomes a staff officer. Advisor.

Fleet battles unfolding across the vast sea of the galaxy
Legend of the Galactic Heroes: My Conquest is the Sea of Stars
Scheduled for release by Toei in March 1988
STORY
1,600 years into the future, humanity has taken control of the galaxy, but has split into the tyrannical Galactic Empire and the democratic Free Planets Alliance, who are constantly at war with each other. In the year 795 of the Universal Calendar, a fleet of the Imperial Forces, led by the 19-year-old genius strategist Reinhard, encounters an Alliance fleet near the gaseous planet Legnica. Reinhard’s fleet immediately engages!
The commander of the Alliance fleet at this time is Vice Admiral Paetta, and his staff officer is Commodore Yang Wen-li. Despite his young age, he is an Alliance strategist with numerous military achievements to his name. However, the incompetent Paetta rejects Yang’s strategy. At that time, a missile attack from Reinhard’s ship causes a nuclear fusion explosion on the planet Legnica, causing enormous damage to the Alliance forces. This was Yang’s rejected plan. It is the meeting of two men who would become lifelong rivals…
Set in the vast universe of the distant future, the descendants of Earthlings are divided into two major factions and engage in battle. We spoke to director Noboru Ishiguro about his enthusiasm for taking on the challenge of creating a full-scale space opera.
“This story is a very classic and simple one, with tens of thousands of space fleets clashing under the command of two savvy men. But I think that’s exactly why it’s possible to bring out the fun of anime, with its exaggerated depictions and exciting adventure action. However, since the goal is to faithfully reproduce the novel, there are some headaches. The novel describes a space fleet battle involving tens of thousands of ships in one row, but trying to depict that is… Also, the characters are all men, so the dubbing is boring, and so on (laughs). But you can look forward to the visuals being flashy. We’re aiming to create realistic depictions of space.”

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a story of heroes born from the times!
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Toei Hall Theaters, Releasing February 6th, 1988
Legend of the Galactic Heroes: My Conquest is the Sea of Stars depicts the two heroes Reinhard and Yang Wen-li who live in an era when the galaxy has been divided into the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance, and the leaders of both sides have become completely corrupted as a result of 150 years of war. The trailer has been completed ahead of the film’s release in February.
The characters drawn by Matsuri Okuda-san are animated to a superb degree, faithfully depicting Yoshiki Tanaka-san’s original work. Furthermore, the incredible number of space battleships clashing against the backdrop of the vast universe also move in a way that is quite different from other anime up until now.
The director is Noboru Ishiguro-san (Yamato, Macross, etc.), the script is by Takeshi Shudō-san (GoShogun, Minky Momo, etc.), the character design and animation director is the aforementioned Matsuri Okuda-san, and the mechanical design is by Naoyuki Katō-san and Studio Nue. The film will be released on February 13th only in Fukuoka and Osaka.

■ As seen in the film trailer
How intense is the fleet battle?!
A clash between space battleships!! Although this is a fairly common theme in science fiction novels, it somehow feels nostalgic in science fiction anime. Perhaps it’s the first time we’ve seen it since Space Battleship Yamato. Let’s introduce the trailer for Legend of the Galactic Heroes, which will evoke such nostalgia. Some of you may have already seen it in the theater, but in the trailer, which is just under a minute long, there is a scene of the battle between the arch-enemies Reinhard and Yang Wen-li. That’s what you see in the sequence of images on the right. Look at them from the top right down. The setting isn’t outer space, but the surface of the gaseous planet Legnica. The white battleship is the Imperial Brunhild, which Reinhard is aboard. The green battleship charging in, firing its bow’s photon cannon indiscriminately, is the Alliance’s Patoroklos. This is the ship of Yang’s superior, Vice Admiral Paetta. It’s also worth noting that over a dozen cuts were used in the scene, which lasts almost a minute, as the two ships exchange beam cannon fire as they pass each other before separating. This trailer gives you a sense of the passion of the staff.
Let’s hear from Producer Masatoshi Tahara.
“We also put a lot of effort into sound effects for this film. In explosion scenes, for example, we aim to create the effect of the audience’s bodies vibrating by using low-pitched sounds just at the very limit of what the human ear can hear. Also, we didn’t use transmitted light for the laser beams, but they are instead painted over with carbon paint, which creates an interesting effect.”
The film will be shown alongside Kyoufu no Bio Ningen Saishuu Kyoushi.

A heroic tale of the starry sky shown through space fleet battles
Everyone has at least once had the experience of gazing up at the twinkling stars in the night sky and contemplating their mystical beauty and the boundless vastness of space. With this vast universe as the stage, a fierce battle unfolds between space fleets numbering tens of thousands – photon beams tearing through space, battleships bursting into gigantic fireballs, fighter craft flying about, people screaming, and tens of thousands of stars staring coldly at it all… The key to this work is the way it depicts the universe itself, which is brought to light by these battles. Scenes such as the assembly of a large fleet also express the scale of infinite space, in that “even a fleet of tens of thousands is merely a speck in the universe.”
The significance of depicting the vastness of the universe is undoubtedly to express the heroic tale that lies hidden in this unknown world. In the galactic ocean that sailors gazed upon in the Age of Discovery, the descendants of humanity are engaged in naval battles… One way to enjoy this work is to immerse yourself in the eternal adventurous spirit that transcends the past and future.

A sci-fi adventure depicting the ambitions and struggles of young people across the universe
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
The OVA based on the original work by Yoshiki Tanaka, which is also featured in this month’s setting materials collection, will soon be completed. The part that has been animated this time is from Legend of the Galactic Heroes Gaiden, which is published in Tokuma Novels.
The story climaxes with the Fourth Battle of Tiamat, where the Imperial fleet of Reinhard, a 19-year-old genius tactician with icy-blue eyes, faces off against the Free Planets Alliance forces, including Commodore Yang Wen-li as a staff officer, who will become Reinhard’s lifelong enemy. The story depicts the friendship (or rather, a relationship that is more like master and servant) between Reinhard and his adjutant and best friend, Kircheis, as well as the love and hate swirling between them and the various people within the Empire.
The director is Noboru Ishiguro, a veteran of future space war sci-fi such as Space Battleship Yamato and Super Dimension Fortress Macross. The script is by Takeshi Shudō, who worked on GoShogun. Furthermore, Akio Sakai is in charge of production, and Yoshiaki Kawajiri is in charge of layout supervision, with Madhouse and Artland staff working together on the production. The film will be released in theaters in February at Toei Halls, and on video in March by Tokuma Japan. This is the first major war sci-fi film in a long time, and it promises not only flashy battle scenes, but also profound human drama.
↑ Reinhard, a cool-headed tactician whose skill matches his good looks
↑ Yang, who hates war, unexpectedly becomes a hero for the Alliance forces.
↑ The two men’s strategies clash and the sparks fly in a galactic battle.
↑ Reinhard’s ambition is to overthrow the current dynasty.
↑ Reinhard’s battleship Brunhild
↑ Attenborough, Yang’s junior, also did a great job alongside him.
